Cabled Vest
The Cabled Vest is made out of  less then 400 yards of a vibrant yellow yarn. It is shown above in size large.
Skill Level: intermediate
Stitches Used: cast on, knit, purl, ssk, kt2, inc, CF6, CB6, picking up stitches, knit in the round, bind of in purl and knit stitch,
Abbreviations: place marker (pm), slip slip knit (ssk), knit two together (k2t), Cable Front 6 (CF6), Cable Back 6 (CB6), Slip (S), knit (K) purl (P)
Measures: 27″ (29″,30″) wide and 15″ (16 1/2″, 18″) long
Gauge: in stockinette stitch, 12 stitches and 16 rows = 4″ by 4″

  • 2 skeins Bernat Softee Chunky, bright yellow – 164 yds (100% acrylic)
  • size 10 1/2 20″ circular knitting needles
  • stitch markers
  • yarn needle

Right Side Cable
rows 1-7: P2, K6, P2.
row 8: P2, CF6, P2.

Repeat these rows as many times as directed.

Left Side Cable
rows 1-7: P2, K6, P2.
row 8: P2, CB6, P2.

Repeat these rows as many time as directed.

-Patterns-

  1. Cast on 84 (88, 92) stitches.
  2. Place marker, join in round, work K2, P2, ribbing for 2″.
  3. K6, pm, work Left Side Cable on the next 10 stitches, pm, 10 (12,14) stitches, pm, work right side cable on the next 10 stitches, pm, knit to end.
  4. Repeat number 3 till piece measures 3 1/2″ (4″, 4 1/2″).
  5. K1, k2t, K3, work Left Side Cable, knit to marker, work Right Side Cable, K3, k2t, K1, ssk, knit till there are 2 stitches left, ssk. (80 [84, 88] stitches)
  6. Repeat number 3 till piece measures 5 1/2 (6″, 6 1/2″).
  7. K1, inc, K3, work Left Side Cable , knit to marker, work Right Side Cable, K3, inc, knit 1, inc, knit to end. (84 [88, 92] stitches)
  8. Repeat number 3 till piece measures 6 1/2″ (8″, 9 1/2″)
  9. K1, inc, K4, work Left Side Cable, knit to marker, work Right Side Cable, K4, inc, K1, inc, knit till there is 1 stitch left inc. (88 [92, 96] stitches]
  10. Knit 7, work Left Side Cable, knit to marker, Work Right Side Cable, knit to end.
  11. Knit 7, bind off the next 30 (32, 34) stitches, knit 57 (59, 61) stitches, turn.
  12. Purl 1 row.
  13. Knit 1 row.
  14. Purl 1 row.
  15. K2, inc, place on stitch holder, bind off 6 stitches, knit till there are 10 stitches left, place back stitches on holder, bind off 6 stitches inc, K2.
  16. P3, K1, P1.
  17. S1, P1, K3.
  18. Repeat numbers 16 and 17 till piece measures 15″ (16 1/2″, 18″), bind off.
  19. Place the other strap on needle, join yarn on the wrong side.
  20. S1, K1, P3.
  21. K3, P1, K1.
  22. Repeat numbers 20 and 21 till piece measures 15″ (16 1/2″, 18″), bind off.
  23. Place back stitches on needle, join yarn on the wrong side.
  24. S1, K1, purl till there are 2 stitches left, knit 1, purl 1.
  25. S1, P1, Knit till there are 2 stitches left, P1, K1.
  26. Repeat numbers 24 and 25 till piece measures 12″ (13 1/3″, 15″).
  27. S1, P1, inc, K1, place stitches on holder, bind off the next 30 (32, 34) stitches, inc, P1, K1, turn.
  28. Repeat numbers 20 and 21 till piece measures 15″ (16 1/2″ 18″), bind off.
  29. Place the other strap stitches on needle, join yarn on the wrong side, repeat numbers 16 and 17 till piece measures 15″ (16 1/2″ 18″), bind off.
  30. Sew the shoulder seams.
  31. Pick up a stitch on every bind off stitch and on every other row on the sides around the neck opening, approximately 92 (108, 124) stitches.
  32. Join in round, work P2,K2, ribbing for 1/2″ (3/4″, 1″), decrease 1 stitch a the four corners.
  33. Continue in ribbing, knitting on the knit stitches and purling on the purl stitches till ribbing measures 1 1/4″ (1 1/2″, 1 3/4″), bind off tightly in ribbing.
  34. Weave in ends.
