Flurry Mittens



Skill Level: intermediate
Stitches Used: cast on, knit, purl, decrease, yarn overs, chain stitch
Abbreviations: knit (k), purl (p), knit two together (k2t), yarn over (yo)
Measures: size newborn, 5” circumference and 5” length
Gauge: with size 8 needles, 16 stitches and 20 rows  = 4” by 4”
Notes: when switching colors every other stitch, carry the yarn along on the wrong side.

-Materials-

  • 1 skein Caron Simply Soft, soft pink – 315 yds (100% acrylic)
  • 1 skein Caron Simply Soft, chocolate  - 315 yds (100% acrylic)
  • 1 set of size 6 double pointed needles (for ribbing)
  • 1 set of size 8 double pointed needles
  • size F crochet hook
  • yarn needle

-Pattern-  (make 2)

  1. With size 6 needles and pink yarn, loosely cast on 24 stitches, divide onto 3 needles
  2. Place marker, join in round, work k1, p1, ribbing for 2 1/4”. (12 rows)
  3. K1, *yo, k2t* repeat within *-* till 1 stitch is left, p1.
  4. Knit 1 row.
  5. Change to size 8 needles, *with pink k1, with brown k1* repeat within *-* to end.
  6. *With brown k1, with pink k1*, repeat within *-* to end.
  7. Repeat numbers 5 and 6 for a total of 10 rows.
  8. Change to brown, knit 1 row.
  9. *K1, k2t*, repeat within *-* to end. (16 stitches)
  10. Knit 1 row.
  11. K2t, to end. (8 stitches)
  12. Cut yarn and pull through the remaining stitches, fasten off, weave in ends.

-Finishing-

  • With the crochet hook and brown yarn, working in chain stitch, make two 12” ties. Weave the ties threw the yarn overs in the mittens.  Make 4 small pom poms and attach one to each end of the ties, and fasten into a bow.

Sweater

  1. Cast on 106 stitches.
  2. Join in round, work k1, p1, ribbing for 4″.
  3. Knit till piece measures 10″.
  4. Inc, k50, inc, k1, inc, k50, inc k1.
  5. Knit 1 row.
  6. Inc, k52, inc, k1, inc, k52, inc, k1.
  7. Knit 1 row.
  8. Inc, k54, inc, k1, inc, k54, inc, k1.
  9. Knit 1 row.
  10. K25, bind off 9, knit to end, cut yarn.
  11. Join the yarn 25 stitches to the left of where you cut the yarn, purl 1 row.
  12. Knit 1 row.
  13. Purl 1 row.
  14. Repeat numbers 12 and 13.
  15. K23 (right front), place stitches on holder, bind off 4 stitches, k55 (back), place stitches on holder, bind off 4, k23 (left front).
  16. With left front stitches, continue in stockinette stitch for 2 1/2″.
  17. K1, k2t, knit to end.
  18. Continue in stockinette stitch ill left front measures 4″.
  19. Knit till there are 3 stitches left, k2t, k1.
  20. Purl 1 row.
  21. Repeat numbers 19 and 20 till left front measures 6 1/2″, bind off.
  22. Place right front stitches on needle, join yarn on the wrong side, work stockinette stitch for 2 1/2″
  23. Knit till there are 3 stitches left, ssk, k1.
  24. Continue in stockinette stitch till right front measures 4″.
  25. K1, ssk, knit to end.
  26. Purl 1 row.
  27. Repeat numbers 25 and 26 till right front measures 6 1/2″, bind off.
  28. Place back stitches on needle, join yarn on wrong side, work stockinette stitch for 2 1/2″.
  29. K1, k2t, knit till there are 3 stitches left, ssk, k1.
  30. Continue in stockinette stitch till back measures 5″.
  31. K1, k2t, knit till there are 3 stitches left, ssk, k1.
  32. P1, ssp, purl till there are 3 stitches left, k2t, k1.
  33. Repeat numbers 31 and 32 till back measures 6 1/2″. (41 stitches)
  34. Bind off.

-Sew shoulder seams.

Edging and Collar

  1. With right side facing, pick up 94 stitches around neck opening. (picking up a stitch every other row and on every bind off stitch)
  2. K23, pm, work k1, p1, ribbing for the next 48 stitches, pm, k23.
  3. Repeat number 2 four times.
  4. K2, k2t, yo, k6, k2t, yo, k6, k2t, yo, k2, work k1, p1, ribbing to marker, knit to end.
  5. Repeat number 2 five times.
  6. Bind off 23 stitches, work k1, p1, ribbing to marker, bind off to end.
  7. Working on only the ribbing stitches, join yarn on wrong side, continue in k1, p1, ribbing for 6 more inches.
  8. Bind off loosely in k1, p1, ribbing.

Sleeves (make 2)

  1. cast on 32 stitches on straight needles.
  2. knit 7 rows.
  3. Knit 1, purl 1, repeat to end.
  4. Repeat number 3 till piece measures 3″.
  5. knit 7 rows.
  6. Purl 1 row.
  7. Knit 1 row.
  8. Repeat numbers 6 and 7 till piece measure 6 1/2″. (ending on a purl row)
  9. knit 1, inc, knit till there are 2 stitches left, inc, k1.
  10. purl 1 row.
  11. Repeat numbers 9 and 10.
  12. Continue in stockinette stitch till sleeve measures 10″.
  13. Knit 1, inc, knit till there are 2 stitches lest, inc, k1.
  14. Purl 1 row.

  16. Continue in stockinette stitch till sleeve measures 15″.
  17. K1, knit till there are 3 stitches left, ssk, k1.

Finishing

  1. Sew the left side of the edging to the 9 bind off stitches in the middle of the sweater.
  2. Sew buttons underneath the buttons holes.
  3. Fasten down the bottom of the button band to keep from curling.

Notes: for bobble rows, join fur yarn at the beginning of each row and drape it across for each bobble. Patons Silverlash is discontinued, it can be substituted for Lion Brand Festive Fur or another metallic fur yarn.
Gauge: in stockinette stitch, with Natura, 14 stitches and 18 rows = 4″ by 4″

  • 1 skein Patons Silverlash, crystallite cream – 164 yds (Polyester, Metallic)

  5. Bind off loosely in knit 4, purl 4, ribbing.
  6. Weave in ends.
  7. Sew sides together.
